Free-space isolators
are polarization-dependent or
polarization-independent. The
polarization-dependent (Faraday) isolator
consists of a polarizer, a Faraday rotator, and
an analyzer at 45° to the polarizer. The
polarization-independent type uses birefringent
crystals (or polarizers), a Faraday rotator and
a half-wave plate, often used in fiber lasers
for system stability.
A Faraday optical isolator is a one-way light
gate based on the magneto-optic non-reciprocal
effect to block back-reflected light. With a
Faraday rotator and two polarizers, it is widely
used in high-performance lasers, precision
measurement and communication systems to shield
laser sources from reflected light and ensure
stable operation. |
